Our Story
Over the years, many people have inquired about having a Cathy’s Rum Cake™ shipped to themselves, friends, and relatives. It is these inquiries that have been the driving force behind the creation of Cathy’s Rum Cake Worldwide.
The Cathy’s Rum Cake Worldwide story begins with an opportunity that presented itself in August 2001. At that time Cathy, the founder and owner of Cathy’s Rum Cake & (Catering) Inc. was seeking additional finances for her business. Lisa Bua Power and Kelly Power, Cathy’s daughter and son-in-law, offered to purchase the rights to produce and ship Cathy’s Rum Cakes.™ Lisa who had been Cathy’s office manager among other duties, and Kelly, a mechanical engineer working for General Dynamics who also helped with the business as time would allow.
Kelly began to see that if he could design or modify existing packaging, this would allow shipment of the fragile, custard-filled cakes to a broader market. Kelly also saw he could use the rapidly expanding Internet to market the cakes. From that beginning, Cathy's Rum Cake Worldwide was conceived.
As time went by, Kelly continued his work at General Dynamics while Lisa continued to manage her mother’s day-to-day business at Cathy’s Rum Cake & (Catering). Then, in July 2006, Kelly made a life changing decision...to take a leave-of-absence from his 26-year engineering career. During this time he started pondering the enormous problem of how to ship the cakes. After much engineering and many test shipments, he discovered a way to make it work.
Because of this success, he made the decision to retire from his engineering career to work full-time on building a business. A business plan was started and with the blessing of Cathy herself, Cathy’s Rum Cake Worldwide was officially incorporated in the State of Arizona in October 2007. Detailed planning for the new business then began in earnest.
In early 2008 Cathy's Rum Cake Worldwide secured a building to hold it’s new state of the art cake factory. Lisa and Kelly then hired an experienced foodservice architect and a foodservice equipment contractor to help with the design and equipment procurement. Construction for the new cake factory began in March of 2009; the factory became fully operational in July. The official trademark "Cathy's Rum Cake" was registered to Cathy's Rum Worldwide, Inc. in the fall of 2009.
Cathy’s Rum Cake Worldwide is a family owned and operated business. Kelly and Lisa Power and their daughters (Lauren, Megan, & Madison) have lived in Gilbert since 1989. Kelly’s grandfather, J.O. Power, homesteaded Power Ranch in Gilbert in 1920. So it is with a rich Arizona family heritage that we look forward to providing you with a truly world class dessert.
